Nearly twenty years ago, I was in the middle of my first engine swap (see About page). Weeks of somewhat hard labor at the hobby shop was starting to pay off. Unfortunately, I ran into a problem with the ignition system or possibly something else that was casusing misfire issues. My buddies Mendel and “the friend formally known as Rasuad” and I tried all sorts of troublshooting but could not quite narrow down the cause. Initially, I thought Zdyne flashed the ECU incorrectly. The engine harness had very few modifications beyond what was specified in forums/website dedicated to this type of stuff. It was a matter of verifying pinouts and ensuring the injector resistor was correctly wired (the two-injector HF model I had lacked a lot of cruial stuff). Out of ideas, I reached out to my brother-in-law, Anthony. We set a time to meet up at the shop and he said he’ll bring some additional tools for good measure.
Armed with a timing light, multimeter and a stoic personality, he started to test my newly created connections.
The culprit was the wiring of the sensor for the distributor.
I fixed the error. Then, sat in the driver’s seat, depressed the clutch, and turned the key…
She started…
Then he proceeded to check the timing after the engine started up.
I/we were so happy to see all that work has came together and a fresh set of eyes helped to fix the final puzzle. I know I had the biggest grin on my face at that moment. He on the other hand, cut a grin but went back to the stoicism.
Not too many years later, him and my sister decided to go their seperate ways. We really didn’t keep in touch for a variety of reasons sadly. The recent news of his passing was surprising to say the least.
Though it seems like it was a different lifetime when we were around each other, I am deeply indebted from your help.
Rest easy brother.
